I believe that art is a way of telling a story in a number of different ways. The different ways of telling a story could be visually, such as a painting. Or audible, such as music. Some forms of art even combine these techniques, like movies. Others combine the two and add some interactivity, like video games.
When I say that art tells a story, I do not mean that all art has the structure of a story with a beginning and end like most stories have, though that certainly falls under my definition of art. Some stories told by art are just emotions, they have no beginning or end like a traditional story does, just an expression of how the artist feels. Also, sometimes the meaning behind a certain piece of art is not obvious. The meaning can be abstract sometimes, which leaves the piece of art open for interpretation. I find this to be a key point of art, interpretation. This means that viewers of a work of art can have their own feelings about that work of art, even if they differ from the artist's original feelings.
One piece of art that helps illustrate my points is the painting shown below.
It is titled "Letting Go" by Esao Andrews. I find that this piece of art is abstract in its exact meaning. So the emotions felt by viewers could differ. This piece falls under the visual category of art.
My next piece of art is an audible piece of art. It is "Play Crack The Sky" by Brand New. I find this to be a little more direct in its meaning, as it tells the story of a ship lost at sea and relates that to life. The feelings in this song are also rather direct, since their lead singing sings with a lot of emotion.
Lastly, an example of art is the game "Portal". Portal combines many different emotions into one game. The game is humorous at times, and gives you a feeling of isolation other times. I find this game to be a great piece of art both visually and audibly.
